Hillhead/Jordanhill 9 Kelso 11

Hillhead/Jordanhill 9 Kelso 11

Kelso’s season at long last was kick started into life with a victory in Glasgow. There had been a good atmosphere at Poynder Park all week. The injury problems were lessening and morale was bolstered by the return, after 9 months global travelling , of Richard Minto and Ewan Ford. With Gordon Laing returning from a long time injury, Kelso believed that this was a game they could win. Kelso kicked off down the slope at Hughenden and camped on the Hills line. They were denied a score by resolute Hills defending but Richard Minto was denied a score when the ball was kicked out of his hand as he was attempting to touch down. Hills weathered the storm and play settled down and both sides had their chances before Kelso went into the lead with Kevin Utterson penalty. This was short lived as Tammy McCulloch replied with a penalty for Hills. It remained like this to the interval.
On resumption of play Hills started briskly and took the lead with another penalty. Kelso kept attacking and their backs , with Kevin Utterson very much to the fore were posing Hills problems. Kelso eventually equalised with another Kevin Utterson penalty. As the game neared it’s conclusion, it was Kelso that looked the likelier to score but with 3 mins left it was Hills that kicked another penalty and Kelso were facing another defeat. The belief that they could still win came through and Kelso swept upfield and after good handling by forwards and backs, Kevin Utterson capped an impressive afternoon’s work by going over in the corner to seal the Tweedsiders first win of the season. This will give the players confidence and it would be no surprise to now see them start climbing the league table.
