Kelso Library readers Group meeting 29th April 2008

Another good turnout for the readers group, eleven people in all. We all appeared to have been reading a lot...a variety of books. The two books Ruth had managed to get for us i.e. The Thirteenth Tale and The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs had not been read by all yet, so we are just hanging on to them until more people can catch up.

However the people who had read the Thirteenth Tale either liked it or did not. "A very convoluted story" was one comment and no definite time period was another. Some people found it easy to get into but as one of our readers said "But that's what the readers group is all about....challenging you to try different books." Well said.

The prospect of tackling the second book mentioned seems to be a bit daunting; Every second word being a swear word(unnecessarily so)....but then it is an Irvine Welsh book!! Mr Welsh probably thinks that as it is his hallmark the readers expect it.

Quite a few members had re-read a book they had liked in earlier times. "Ballet Shoes" children's book by Noel Streatfield; "Oliver Twist" and "Tess of the Durbervilles", although with "Tess" the reader thought she had accepted her lot too easily...but it was sad.

We were also presented with the Quiz (50p a shot) for our Friends of Kelso Library funds at the library. Everyone bought at least one but how many will be returned is another story. The prize is....you've guessed it, a book token!

We also had quite a good turn out of poems..."Bloody Men"; "The Lake Isle of Innisfree; "The Fair Finger"; "The Naming of Cats"; "Jenny Kissed Me"; "The Ruined Woman" and "Silver" and authors included Walter de la Mare; Thomas Hardy; TS Eliot, Walter Wingate and Wendy Cope.

Quite an interesting meeting. Next meeting the last Tuesday in May
(27th). Happy reading till the next time....
